When you do your 2019 business planning, remember to include your hiring goals. The REACH system gives you everything you need to be successful.
Okay, Bombshells put down your pumpkin spice latte and let’s get real about how to REACH your 2019 hiring goals. When you set your 2019 business goals, remember to plan for the staff to achieve them. A hiring plan will guide not only your hiring but also your budgeting and financial needs to support those new hires. We set goals to grow our businesses which is why you’ll love using my REACH system for your hiring goals.
Step One: R—Reflection
Hiring an employee, whether it’s your first hire or your hundredth, is scary. It’s hard work. It can make or break your business. And, it’s expensive. Costs range from recruiting costs to training costs, to office space and equipment costs. Then, there’s payroll. Lots of hidden costs there. Download this worksheet to calculate the actual payroll costs of hiring an employee.
Knowing those costs up front helps you manage your cash flow and determine the right time to hire.
Step Two: E—Excellence
When I work with clients, they often are working from a point of pain. They need help and they need it now. This mindset is bad because it often means hiring the first available person rather than waiting for the best available candidate. Take the time to define your ideal employee and know how to attract those people to your business. Chapter 3 of The YOLO Principle: The Ultimate Hiring Guide for Small Business shows you how.
When you work from a mindset of excellence, you avoid hiring mistakes. Believe me, it’s better for you and your business!
Step Three: A–Adapt
The labor market is tight and competitive. This means the more flexible you can be in how you staff your business, the more successful you’ll be. Remember, more choices translate into greater success. Are employees with the skills you need readily available in your area? Or, will you have to recruit from other nearby communities? If there is a shortage of skilled employees in your area, how will you position your company to be more attractive than your competition? Or, you might need to use freelancers on sites like Upwork or Fiverr. I cover recruiting strategy in Chapter 5 of The YOLO Principle.
Your carefully planned strategy will need to be adjusted for unexpected obstacles so be flexible and open to different solutions.
Step Four: C—Commit
To hire successfully, you must commit to action. Doing nothing gets you nowhere. Hiring is time-consuming and frustrating in the best of times. Once you commit to a hiring plan, start taking action. Here are a few things you can do.
- Block out the time required to write job descriptions, post job ads, review resumes, schedule interviews, check references, and all the other little details that are part of recruiting.
- Use good time management skills to make sure you can spend quality time on hiring and still continue operating your business.
- Plan for any training will your new hire needs as well as budgeting any training costs.
- Be ready to get your new hire started with any office space, equipment, tools, or resources they need to be successful.
The biggest mistake I see when working with clients is failing to block out the time required to recruit and hire good employees. Commit to the time necessary to reach your hiring goals.
Step Five: H—Hire
